Nàng Út Lót is the resourceful heroine of the Mường narrative poem Út Lót – Hồ Liêu. To spare her aged father a long and dangerous duty she disguises herself as a man and undertakes the journey in his place; travelling in the company of the lord's son Hồ Liêu she comes to love him, and he, unaware at first of her true sex, is drawn to her. The tale, celebrated among the Mường of Thanh Hóa and Hòa Bình, turns on the tension between duty, disguise and love, and, like the story of Nàng Ờm, ends in separation and grief.
