Wærxæg

Ossetian · mortal · cosmogonic · mortal

The first Nart; eponymous founder of the Wærhægtæ lineage, one of the three foundational Nart clans (alongside the Æhsærtæggatæ — descendants of his son Akhsartæg — and the Boriatæ — a third lineage of contested origin). His parentage is not specified; he is the genealogical anchor of the Nart heroic-epic cycle. Lives at the Cosmic Tree, the Nart axis-mundi, identified by Dumézil (1965) as the Iranic Indo-European world-tree reflex. The Wærhægtæ lineage-name (with Ossetian plural marker -tæ) preserves the founder-eponym pattern characteristic of Iranic-Caucasian clan-onomastics. The wolf-totemic etymology (Abaev 1958) connecting Wærxæg to Iranic *varka- "wolf" preserves a possible Sarmatian totemic substrate beneath the Nart heroic frame.
