Maori hero, younger brother of Tawhaki and son of Hema and Urutonga. Helped avenge Hema on the Ponaturi, but died on the vine of ascent when he climbed the wrong vine; Tawhaki took his eyes (or honoured him) and completed the climb to the heavens.
