Ua is known only genealogically, as the father of Urutonga, the woman who married Hemā and bore the heroes Tāwhaki and Karihi. He plays no independent role in the recorded narratives of the Tāwhaki cycle, and no tradition of divinity attaches to him — he is entered as a mortal ancestor of the heroic line. His name is the ordinary Māori word for rain.
