Scion-tier son of Tāwhaki (quartigod) by Hinepiripiri. Named "Long-piece-of-firewood" by his father to commemorate Tāwhaki's revival-by-fire-after-cousin-attack and encode the duty of paternal vengeance. Father of Rata (canonical canoe-builder-avenger of the Rata cycle). Killed by the ogre Matuku-takotako at the monster's pool while seeking rare food for his pregnant wife — the canonical-Polynesian killed-father narrative-event that motivates the Rata vengeance-quest. The killing is the canonical death-of-the-father instance whose bones-become-magical-instrument-of-the-killer narrative-device frames the Rata-recovery scene.
