Mortal Roman general (15 BCE-19 CE); the canonical-Tacitean tragic-hero of Annales 1-2. Born to Drusus the Elder and Antonia Minor; through his mother, grandson of Octavia Minor and great-nephew of Augustus. Adopted by his uncle Tiberius on 26 June 4 CE as condition of Tiberius's own adoption — the canonical-Augustan succession-architecture. Married Agrippina the Elder (Augustus's biological granddaughter through Iulia the Elder) ca. 5 CE; bore nine children including Caligula (the future third emperor, born 31 August 12 CE at Antium) and Agrippina the Younger (mother of Nero). On Augustus's 14 CE death, quelled the Rhine-legions mutiny against Tiberius — the canonical-Tacitean opening-event of Annales 1. Conducted the Germanic campaigns 14-16 CE; recovered two of three legionary-eagles lost at Teutoburg 9 CE; gave the unburied Roman bones formal burial — the canonical-Tacitean Annales 1.61-62 Teutoburg-pietas scene. Awarded a triumph 26 May 17 CE; sent east with maius imperium. Died 10 October 19 CE at Antioch aged 33 — accused Piso and Plancina of poisoning him on his deathbed per Tacitus Annales 2.69; canonical-Tacitean ambiguity about Tiberius's and Livia's complicity. Piso committed suicide during the subsequent Senate-trial 20 CE.
