Moussa Sarr

Serer · numen · ancestral · numen

Moussa Sarr is an individually named fangool (ancestral saint) of the Serer people of Senegal, the Gambia and Mauritania. He belongs to the 'milk' pangool, the peaceful order of ancestral spirits contrasted with the violent 'blood' pangool: milk pangool reject everything symbolising violence or death, such as iron, weapons, gunpowder, blood and the colour red, and act as protectors of Serer settlements and defenders of the weak. Like all pangool he serves as an intermediary between the living and the supreme being Roog.
