Njemeh of Languème

Serer · numen · ancestral · numen

Njemeh (Ndiémé) of Languème is an individually named fangool of the Serer people, classed among the 'milk' pangool, the peaceful order of ancestral spirits contrasted with the 'blood' pangool. Milk pangool such as Njemeh reject everything that evokes violence, destruction or death, including iron, weapons, gunpowder, blood and the colour red, and serve as protectors of Serer towns and defenders of the weak. Like all pangool, she intercedes between the living community and the supreme being Roog.
