Biabanguli

Talysh · numen · Talysh traditional religion; continuing · numen

Biabanguli, also given as Viavangoli or Biaban-guli, is the ghoul of the wilderness in Talysh belief, a menacing spirit that haunts the desolate wastes and wild places and preys upon the lone traveller. Its name, from Persian biābān 'waste, desert' and ghul 'ghoul', marks it as the local reflex of the Islamicate ghoul of the wilderness. Talysh tradition ranks it beside the forest wild-man Alamerd, the two together embodying the terrors of the uninhabited land beyond the village.
