Towa e

Tewa Pueblos · numen · Tewa Pueblos traditional religion; continuing · numen

The Towa e are the war-spirit brothers of Tewa cosmology, brought into being by the Corn Mothers during the ordering of the world after the emergence. Stationed upon the four flat-topped hills that surround the Tewa homeland, they guard the people and mark the boundary between the settled center and the wild periphery. In the living community their authority is exercised by the War Captains, or Outside Chiefs, who police ceremonies, protect the pueblo, and enforce the injunctions of the Made People. Though usually spoken of as a pair of guardian brothers on each hill, they belong to the wider Pueblo pattern of twin war gods, of which the Zuni Ahayuta are the best-known parallel.
