White Corn Maiden

Tewa Pueblos · deity · Tewa Pueblos traditional religion; continuing · deity

White Corn Maiden, called 'near to Ice,' is one of the two primordial Corn Mothers who existed with humankind in the underworld at Sipofene before the emergence. She is the mother of the Winter moiety, the cold half of the dual Tewa cosmos, standing opposite Blue Corn Woman, mother of the Summer people. The Winter chief governs in her name through the frost-bound months. Together the two Corn Mothers embody the seasonal dualism that structures Tewa society, ritual calendar, and worldview, and each moiety's people trace their ultimate origin to her.
