Fɨzido

Uitoto · demigod · Uitoto traditional religion; continuing · demigod

Fɨzido is the Uitoto trickster, described as mischievous, cunning, and daring, and the protagonist of the fire-origin narrative. Allied with the water being Buinaima, who has taken the solar name Jitoma, he swallows a rubbery resin from an ant nest to hold coals in his mouth, transforms into a small bird, and hides inside a floating fruit drifting toward the daughter of the fire's owner; brought near the hearth to be warmed, he snatches and swallows the fire. The owner curses him that the same flame will one day burn him. Through his theft fire passes to humankind as the warmth of the living body, and the birds that took part, above all the hummingbird, keep the fire's iridescent colours in their plumage.
