Monairue Jitoma

Uitoto · deity · Uitoto traditional religion; continuing · deity

Monairue Jitoma, the Sun of Dawn, is the primordial solar father in the Uitoto cycle of the Orphans of the Sun as narrated by the Ocaina-Uitoto elder Hipólito Candre of the Igaraparaná. He is slain early in the narrative, leaving his sons Jitoma and Kechatoma orphaned; their long labour of vengeance and their eventual ascent as luminaries form the backbone of the cycle. His name marks him as an earlier or dawning solar power distinct from the fully risen sun that his son Jitoma becomes.
