Ultontoz, commonly Ultan, is the antagonist of the return-half of the Alpomish epic: a half-brother of the hero fathered by Boybori upon a slave-woman. When word comes that Alpomish has perished in the Kalmyk pit-prison, Ultontoz usurps the chieftaincy of the Qungirot, rules them cruelly, and presses the faithful Barchin toward marriage. His exposure and destruction upon the hero's disguised return furnishes the epic's climactic restoration of legitimate order, and his slave origin sharpens the dastan's concern with rightful lineage and rule.
