Yachor Coc

Yanesha · deity · Yanesha traditional religion; continuing · deity

Yachor Coc, 'Our Mother Coca,' is the divine origin of the coca plant. In the myth cycle of the sun she is the wife of Yompor Ror, though some tellings make her the wife of his brother Etetar. Discovering that she had lain with Yompor Huar, the boy he had raised, Ror in his fury dismembered her and flung the pieces of her body across the land; where they fell there sprang the coca bushes whose leaves the Yanesha chew, so that the plant of ritual and sociality carries the memory of divine betrayal and punishment.
