Az
Zoroastrian · deity · primordial · deity
Sex is recorded as female because the Middle Persian tradition treats Az as feminine; the Avestan noun's gender is the ground for it and the treatment consulted does not state it either way, which is why the weight on this record is medium rather than high. The figure grows enormously in Manichaean use, where Az becomes a principal power — a transmission worth noting in a corpus that already holds seven Manichaean records and did not hold this one.
