Ahuitzotl

Aztec/Mexica · mortal · triple alliance · mortal

Ahuitzotl is the empire at its largest and its worst. He took Mexica power to both oceans and nearly to Guatemala, and he opened the rebuilt Templo Mayor in 1487 with a sacrifice whose reported death toll — eighty thousand over four days, in the sources — is almost certainly a propaganda figure and is still, at any plausible discount, a mass killing. He is named after a water creature that drags people under. He died a few years later of an injury sustained when a new aqueduct he had insisted on flooded Tenochtitlan, which is an ending with a certain shape to it.
