Lumabat

Bagobo · deity · Bagobo traditional religion; continuing · deity

Lumabat is the great culture-hero of the Bagobo, a son of Tuglay and Tuglibung who led a company toward the sky to become diwata. At the rim of the world, where sky and earth clap together like closing jaws, many of his followers were crushed, but Lumabat passed through. A diwata opened his abdomen and drew out his bowels so that he need never again eat and would not die, and he became a foremost divinity of the sky-world. He sought to bring his sister Mebuyan with him, but she refused and went down instead into the land of the dead.
