Qatgoro
Banks Islands · numen · Banks Islands traditional religion; continuing · numen
Qatgoro is the primordial stone-mother of the Qat cycle. At Alo Sepere on Vanua Lava she was a stone that burst asunder and brought forth Qat, and in the same hour his eleven brothers, all of one mother and without any father. She belongs to the widespread Banks Islands theme of vui and mana concentrated in stones, and her sole but foundational act is the birth of the culture-hero and his kin from her riven body.
