Tangaro Gilagilala, 'Tangaro the Wise', is the cleverest of Qat's eleven brothers, all of whom bear the name Tangaro and were born together from the stone Qatgoro. Where his brother Loloqong is a byword for folly, Gilagilala understands everything and does all things rightly; the pair express a characteristic Banks Islands contrast of wisdom and stupidity within a single set of kin. In the cycle the brothers as a body grow jealous of Qat's wife Ro Lei and repeatedly plot his death.
