The sex is recorded as unknown because that is the position the tradition takes rather than a gap in the sources: Lan Caihe is depicted as androgynous, is described in some accounts as a man in women's dress and in others as a woman, and the group's own literature treats the ambiguity as characteristic. Filling it in either direction would be the invention this programme forbids.
