The fan is not decoration: in the group's stories it revives the dead, and it is how you tell him from the other elders on a lacquer screen. The Eight are a set in which each member is identified by a held object, which makes them unusually stable across a thousand years of depiction — an eighteenth-century porcelain and a Ming woodblock name them the same way, by what is in their hands.
