Bull Demon King
Chinese · deity · mythic · Recorded classification
He is what Sun Wukong would have been without the pilgrimage: the same power, the same self-awarded title one word different, the same brotherhood of demon-kings — and no master, no journey and no restraint. The Flaming Mountains episode, where the party must borrow his estranged wife's fan to pass, is the longest single sequence in the novel and turns entirely on the fact that the monkey and the bull were once sworn brothers.
