Atu'a'ine

Dobu · numen · Dobu traditional religion; continuing · numen

Atu'a'ine is one of three siblings who, in the Kula mythology of the Dobu district, were turned to stone along the sea route near the Sanaroa lagoon. He and his brother Aturamo'a face the sea, and passing voyagers give them offerings (pokala) and recite spells to gain luck and valuables in the Kula. The stones are living presences to whom the exchange is owed, binding the geography of the voyage to the myth of the Kula itself.
