Theban princess, daughter of King Creon of Thebes; Heracles's first wife, given to him by Creon as reward for delivering Thebes from Erginus and the Minyans. Bore him several children. Killed alongside the children by Heracles in his Hera-induced madness — the act that sent him to the Delphic oracle and triggered the Twelve Labors as expiation. Euripides's Heracles makes the killing the apex of the Mainomenos sequence; the Apollodorian tradition treats it as the foundational catastrophe of the canonical Heracles cycle.
