Seukúkui, the law-giving lord

Kogi · deity · Kogi traditional religion; continuing · deity

Seukúkui is the ancestral law-giver of Kogi tradition, one of the founding lords born of the Great Mother. He is identified as the 'night chief' and Lord of the West, lord of the trees and of all things black, and is named as the principal lord who promulgated the Law of the Mother, sitting at the centre among the other lords. The Law of the Mother is the comprehensive sacred order in which every object, action and intention has a spirit-owner; it is this body of ancestral law that the mama priesthood spend years learning to guide, heal and interpret. As a son of the Mother, Seukúkui is brother to the first ancestor Sintana and to Aldauhuíku, lord of cultivation.
