Laksamana

Maranao · mortal · Maranao traditional religion; continuing · mortal

The monkey-hero of the Maranao Ramayana, called Laksamana, is a being of prodigious strength who leaps the sea, sets fire to Maharadia Lawana's city, and leads the war that frees the captive princess. He is the Maranao counterpart of Hanuman. Sources differ on his parentage: in Francisco's recorded text he is the marvellous son of Mangandiri and Tuwan Potre, born in monkey form, while other tellings make him an allied monkey-champion rather than their child.
