Jaguar God of the Underworld
Maya · deity · cosmogonic · deity
The Maya sun does not stop at sunset; it goes under and becomes a jaguar, and it is dangerous down there. This is the face that Classic kings put on their war shields, which is the practical end of the theology: the night sun is the sun at its most violent and a shield with his face is a shield carrying that. The registry held Kinich Ahau, the day sun, and not the other half of him.
