K'awiil is inside the names of the kings. Jasaw Chan K'awiil, Yik'in Chan K'awiil, Sihyaj Chan K'awiil, Chan Imix K'awiil, B'alaj Chan K'awiil, Waxaklajuun Ub'aah K'awiil — six rulers in this batch are named after him, which is roughly the position Ninurta and Ashur occupied in Assyria, and the registry had the kings' names before it had the god, exactly as it did there. He is the one a king holds: the manikin sceptre with a smoking axe in its forehead and one leg ending in a serpent is K'awiil, and to accede is to take him in the hand.
