Mastamho, also Mastamxo or Kumastamho, younger brother of Matavilya and son of Sky and Earth, is the great transformer who completed the ordering of the world after Matavilya's death. Standing at Avikwame, he thrust his cane into the ground to bring forth the Colorado River, then rode its flood in a boat to cut the valley and settle its waters. He raised the mountains, divided day from night, and gathered the peoples in the sacred house to name the tribes, assign their lands and speech, and grant the Mohave their dreams and song-cycles, farming, and the institutions of war and curing. His work finished, he transformed himself into the fish-eagle, losing his mind and speech. He is regarded as the source of the dreamed power on which Mohave shamans and singers drew.
