Koakanggi is the child at the centre of the Prupe and Koromarange narrative, the granddaughter of Koromarange and grand-niece of the cannibal Prupe. She is the one child of the district whom the blind Prupe does not devour, because Prupe wishes to take the girl's clear eyes to restore her own lost sight. Abducted to Prupe's camp, Koakanggi is saved when her grandmother Koromarange delays Prupe with a pierced water-dish and escapes with her. She is a mortal figure whose peril drives the story's lesson about the care and protection of children.
