Koromarange

Ngarrindjeri · numen · Ngarrindjeri traditional religion; continuing · numen

Koromarange is the sister of the cannibal Prupe and the grandmother of the child Koakanggi, both women of the Marntandi clan and of the same ngaitji (totem). When Prupe abducted Koakanggi to take the child's eyes, Koromarange feigned pleasure and, complaining of tiredness after fishing, asked Prupe to fetch water; she secretly pierced the water-dish (merikin) so that it could not be filled. While Prupe was delayed, Koromarange fled with the child, and Prupe, returning to an empty camp, met her death in her own fire. The story teaches the protection of children and the punishment of those who break the law of kinship and care.
