Rongo

Rapa Nui · deity · mythic · deity

Rongo is the Rapa Nui reflex of the widespread Polynesian god Rongo/Lono. On Easter Island his role in the surviving record is genealogical: he is the son of Tangaroa, and with his father he is the divine ancestor from whom the ariki of the island, beginning with Hotu Matu'a, claimed direct descent (Métraux 1940:127).
