Epaphus

Half-Olympian son of Zeus by Io. Conceived after Io's gadfly-driven wandering from Argos through Asia ended at the Nile in Egypt — Zeus restored her to human form and conceived Epaphus by his touch (epaphē, the etymology from which Epaphus takes his name). Born on the banks of the Nile; Hera in continuing wrath sent the Curetes to abduct the infant, who was hidden in Syria; Io recovered him after long search at Byblos. Returned to Egypt, reigned as king, and founded the city of Memphis (named after his wife Memphis daughter of the Nile, in some accounts). The genealogical breadth of his descent is among the most extensive in Greek mythology: through his daughter Libya (eponym of the African region) and her twin sons Belus and Agenor by Poseidon descend the Argive royal line (→ the Danaids → ultimately Heracles), the Phoenician royal lines, the Cretan royal line (→ Minos, Rhadamanthys, Sarpedon), and the Theban royal line (→ Cadmus). Per the Herodotean interpretatio (Hist. 2.153), identified posthumously with the Apis bull of Memphis — the bovine cult-equation pivots on Io's heifer-form and grounds the broader Greek-Egyptian religious syncretism that develops through the classical and Hellenistic periods. Aeschylus uses the Epaphus genealogy as the structural backbone of the Suppliants tetralogy on the Danaids' return to Argos.
