Orestes

Greek · mortal · post trojan war · mortal

Mortal only son of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra; the avenger of the Oresteia. Saved as a child to Phocis and bound to Pylades, he returns at Apollo's command, kills Aegisthus and his own mother, and is hounded mad by her Erinyes until his acquittal before the Areopagus turns the Furies into the Eumenides — Aeschylus's myth of the birth of the law-court. Later fetches the Taurian image of Artemis and rescues his sister Iphigenia; reigns over Argos and Sparta, marries his cousin Hermione, and dies of a snakebite in old age. Sister-bonded to Iphigenia, Electra, and Chrysothemis. Authored mortal: a scion father and mortal mother.
