Toyotama-hime
Japanese · deity · kamiyo · deity
The forbidden look is the oldest tale-type in Japan and this is its founding instance: the wife who is not what she appears, the husband who cannot help himself, the marriage that ends at the moment of the birth. What she is when he looks varies between the Kojiki and the Nihon Shoki — a great sea-creature in both, differently named — and the record does not pick one. The grandmother of the first emperor of Japan left because her husband could not keep a promise for one night.
