Vari-ma-te-takere

Mangaian · deity · primordial · deity

Primordial mother of the Mangaian pantheon (Gill 1876). Her four other children — Tango (lord of the right side), Tumu-te-ana-oa ('the Echo'), Raka (lord of the winds, to whom she gave a great basket holding the winds), and Tu-metua ('the loved one', the youngest, kept ever beside her) — are attested by Gill but minor; they are cited here rather than authored as separate stubs. SOLITARY (as to ancestry): she is the self-existent 'very beginning' with no parent, spouse, or sibling — by definition the root of the genealogy (Gill 1876, Ch. I). Her descendants are wired.
