He does everything right and loses anyway: takes lawful compensation, hides the goods inside a mountain, posts a guard he can trust. Odin gets in through his own brother and out past his own daughter, and the skalds who told the story were the people who had the mead afterwards — which is worth remembering about whose account this is.
