Ayar Auca

Inca · demigod · pacaritambo emergence · demigod

Warrior-brother of the four Ayar founders. His transformation into stone at the foundation point of Cuzco fixes the imperial capital geographically; in Sarmiento's variant, his petrification is identified with one of the foundation stones of the Coricancha. Of the four Ayar brothers, only Manco Cápac proceeded as a living Sapa Inca founder; the three brothers (Cachi sealed in cave, Uchu transformed at Huanacauri, Auca transformed at Cuzco) each anchor a directional huaca that, in Zuidema's structuralist reading (1964, 1990), inscribes the four-quarters Tahuantinsuyu ideology onto the founder narrative — the brothers' endpoints mark the cardinal-directional anchors of the imperial cosmography. The narrative pattern of brother-elimination-by-petrification is characteristic of Andean dynastic-foundation myths and parallels patterns in the Muisca, Aymara, and broader pre-Columbian Andean material.
