Ayar Uchu

Inca · demigod · pacaritambo emergence · demigod

The chili-pepper brother of the four Ayar founders. His transformation into the stone huaca of Huanacauri produces one of the four most-important sacred sites of the imperial Inca state cult; the Huanacauri huaca was central to the annual Capac Raymi / Huarachicuy male-puberty initiation rite, in which royal youths received the huara (breechclout) and assumed adult Inca status. The cult is among the most ratified in the entire Inca religious-political system, and Ayar Uchu's transformation-narrative is treated in the chronicle tradition as the foundational sacrifice that permitted the migration's success and the establishment of Cuzco. Comparative scholarship (Urton 1990; Bauer & Stanish 2001) reads the Huanacauri cult as the Inca-imperial systematization of an older pre-Inca regional huaca, with the Pacaritambo brother-narrative serving as the dynastic legitimization-overlay.
