Mama Cura

Inca · demigod · pacaritambo emergence · demigod

Sister-founder of the eight Pacaritambo emergent. Less narratively prominent than Mama Ocllo (the Coya), Mama Huaco (the warrior-priestess), or Mama Raua, Mama Cura is the household-domestic-arts complement to her warrior-sister and queen-sister. The Sarmiento variant pairs her as sister-wife of Ayar Cachi, who was sealed in the cave; in that reading, she effectively becomes a widowed founder-sister who proceeded to Cuzco as part of the surviving cohort. The four-Mama structure (Ocllo, Huaco, Cura, Raua) parallels the four-Ayar structure and is read by Zuidema (1964) as encoding the four-quarters Tahuantinsuyu ideology onto the founder generation — each Mama anchoring a directional-functional aspect of Inca state ideology.
